Constipation is often a sign that fluid intake needs to be increased, or that your baby's diet is lacking in certain things that will keep his bowel movements normal and regular.
As a mother of 4, I totally sympathise with the difficulties faced when trying to encourage a toddler (often fussy eaters) to eat the right things.
I would avoid any suppositories just yet as these just clear up the existing constipation and not the root cause.
Firstly, speak to your doctor. If there is something more serious underlying and causing the constipation, repeated visits to the G.P. will make sure that all cases of constipation are recorded and he can be referred for specialist treatment if necessary.
Whilst you are waiting for an appointment (which shouldn't be too long given your little boy is only 18 months old) try to cut out processed foods from his diet and increase his fluid and fibre intake. Fibre in the diet without adequate fluid intake will only make the problem worse, as fibre will bulk up his stools.
Fruit and veg in his daily diet should prevent the problem from occurring again, but it may take some creativity and ingenuity to include these in his diet if he is a fussy little fella like most 1 year olds.
I hope this helps. Good luck!

These are the best tricks for baby constipation.. warm baths naturally relax the bowels.. and he may go in the tub or when he gets out... try plenty of fruit juice. They have a natural safe laxative like effect.. prune or apple.. and if this does't work, try to get him to eat some different foods.. apples, whole grains etc.. If you still have a problem with him, take him to the pediatritian, Constipation can be a sign of a food intolerance.

Usually constipation is caused by too much iron in the diet or not enough fluids. Raisin bran and prunes not more than 2 cause they work. Lots of fruit juice at 100% for a day should do the job. Stay away from corn and cheese because they are hard to digest. Watch iron high vegetables like broccoli, spinach and green beans. Good luck oh yeah kids love candied prunes.

To fix the immediate problem, I would call your Pediatrician's office and ask the nurse what they recommend, especially before giving a suppository. You don't want to create the opposite problem - which could dehydrate him and cause more constipation (a continuous cycle).
The two main causes of constipation? dehydration and certain medications.
For long term, keep him well hydrated (Pedialyte is good, 100% fruit juices). No liquids that can dehdrate (contain caffiene). Make those liquids readily available, to the point of offering them on a regular schedule. Make sure that he gets enough fiber in his diet (whole grains, fruits, vegetables). You mentioned he is active, that is great! Keep him that way. Less activity will only perpetuate the problem.

My daughter had this example, and he or she does no longer drink cooled boiled water so I extra a tiny volume of fruit juice to it. Use the clean , no longer from consentrate style, attempt orange or apple, my daughter likes apple and mango, dilute about a million area juice to 10 aspects water. also massaging the tummy, beginning low on HER correct hand area, as a lot as her abdomen button, in the course of the excellent of her abdomen button and down her left area helps, make certain you do it in a clockwise route as that's the way the bowel travels. I extensively utilized to placed a tiny little bit of vaseline on a cotton bud and purely placed it round her anus and up very particularly. she will be able to get over this degree, see you later as she is taking some formula and under no circumstances vomitting dont hardship too a lot. If she does commence refusing foodstuff thoroughly and vomitting take her to medical doctors or ER.

You can try baby suppositories. Just one once per day should do the trick. Can be found in any chemist or drug store.
If you're a bit queasy going that route, why not increase his intake of fruits and pure fruit juices. Raisins, grapes and plums are great examples.

Try a bit of olive oil in milk. Extra fibre(rughage)I buy it at a health shop.Had same problems with my 11month old girl.Fake fruit juice definitely no no!Try loads of water. Water is very important, its quite strange that an active boy gets constipated, go to www.babycentre.com for info, very useful site. if ur worried see the paed, let them do a sonar and x ray just to be safe, i did and it felt great to know there wasnt any "hectic" problems....We have Gliserine Suppositries (i live in South Africa) dunno if u get them abroad.
