Death is a very frightening thing as we realize our own mortality that some day we too will be dead. But some cultures wisely turn it around as a time when the soul enters the hereafter, i.e. the Irish and their wakes and the blacks with their bands in the deep south. Both customs are to be respected as they help lighten the fear of death a little for the survivors. The Chinese mourn their dead but remember their ancestors with a special celebration called Ching Ming Festival and they have a picnic at the grave site and welcome their departed loved ones back to spend a special day with their children and grandchildren. All of the favorite foods of the deceased are prepared, and whiskey is offered. It is not a time of sadness but rather of reunion. Of course the food is eaten by the people and the whiskey is drunk. Firecrackers explode almost continuously to celebrate the departeds slight return from their heavenly tasks. I am Buddhist and we believe in reincarnation of the soul (or recycling) and the life you have just used is a step towards perfection and heaven. I was born and christened in America but spent my youth in Asia and I found I could not endure the darkeness and the mystical quality of the Catholic Church and actually shuddered when I entered one. So a funeral was doubly terrifying. The stained glass windows with martyrs, crucifixes and the blood-red votive glasses pushed me away from that church.

Funerals can be scarry for many reasons it depends on the funeral.
1) If they decide to embalm the body. Then you have this creapy body staring at you.
2) If family fights over objects of the dead person (Vultures)
3) If there is a fist fight outside of the church (my boyfriends extended family) they had to call the police
do people put your feelings down? When my grandfather died people put me down. I was always messing up. I was only 11 and did not have the correct dress and then no slip for the dress. I was growing. I had no black dress. It was a mess. I was always crying because everone was criticizing me.

Funerals is scary for some because of their belief that the spirit of the dead is roaming around. But what really scares everybody is the realization that life is uncertain and death is sure to come. And it is more scary when you don't know where your soul is going- HEAVEN OR HELL. For people who have assurance of salvation funerals are not scary for in reality it is just the beginning of life. Funerals should always remind us that we have only one life to live. How you live your life will determine how you will spend your eternity.

I have never seen a funeral that's scary. What are you talking about? I'll tell you what scares me, a circus. Whenever the circus came to town I got really scared. I'm getting scared now just thinking about it.

funerals are scary because it shows the truth of death , you know u are going to die one day , but then after 3 days u are back again to old ways, forget death , death is what happens to others not to you

I think because it reminds us of our own mortality. If it was someone you knew, it can sometimes be hard to grasp that hey someone we knew has passed away. Christians though shouldn't let it get them down, for if a person is saved, we'll meet them again.

'cos you can never be too sure whether the guy is actually dead. I've often imagined what it would be like if he or she opened the eyes and sat upright in the coffin and laughed at all the people....

Because rather than celebrating the life of the deceased, people tend to mourn the loss of that person.

Friends, or A loved ones died and then we might think of our funeral. Don't worry there still with us.
