The question is not specific enough. I think native American languages (from both Americas) have the most complex grammars. Many languages are very metaphoric and full of wonderful idiomatic phrases: Japanese, the Celtic languages, even my language (Romanian), Swahili and others.
Oh, I wouldn't be Anglo-centric on this one. English was empoverished and over-simplified at the time of the Norman conquest, when the noblemen spoke French and Anglo-Saxon was left to the uneducated classes. What we now have as English is only the skeleton of what might have been...

I have some experience in learning foreign languages, and english is also one of them. My native language is serbian, I was also learning german and greek. Among greek, german and english, greek was the hardest, than german and english on the last place. Although the greek is hard, the serbian is even harder. For example, greek language have 4 cases and serbian have 8!It is very hard for foreigners to understand that, and when they speak serbian they never do it right. Than come all the other elements of the grammar. I speak from my personal experience, so for me english is definitely the easiest to learn. What the most can show which language is the richest in grammar & phrases (meaning:the hardest to learn) is how the foreigners are able to understand it and speak it.

I am from Albania and people here say that albanian is the richest language, but i don't really believe it (even though it's my language). I would definitely have to say it's german. I've learned german for a few months and I'm sure tha is one of the richest languages in phrases and even more in grammar.

The English language is indeed the pinnacle of perfection in both grammar and phraseology. What else can describe the subtleties of life with such eloquence, or communicate the most intense of emotions with a single word? Ah, none other than English.

I exclude "TXT" and other butchered forms of the language as these are the scrawlings and pseudo-phonetics of the barely literate.

However, the regional variations & the continuing evolution of the language is something to be marveled at.

The only way this question makes sense is if we refer to languages which are common and accessible. Thus, their richness has meaning not only to native but non-native speakers as well. If few non-native speakers exist for a language then to talk about its richness is meaningless since to talk about its richness requires comparison with the languages of the non-native speakers. That being said, I am not really sure which language is richest in grammar and lexicon.

Irish Gaelic only has nine irregular verbs (some of which are only irregular in one tense) and an early literary history which pre-dates and outshines anything in the English Language of a similar period.

I would however reluctantly concede that today the wonderful bastardized language that is English offers the richest and and most meaningful form of verbal expression on earth.

its very amusing to see that u all answered english language is the richest when you have no idea. Alphabet begin from Greek language and the most languages in the world are made by Greek. Greek language even has words that cant be translated in other languages, simply cause other languages are not too rich!

Why does everybody say its English? I know at least three other European languages that are richer in grammar than English, a part of Croatian (or any other ex Yugoslav languages- like Serbian) and any other Slavic languages. English is rich in its phrases, but that's it.
