I get it that the kid won't remember the pain years from now. However, there's always the possibility of infection and/or allergic reaction to the studs which could lead to some discomfort and agony for the child now.

I hate to think of some baby going through what I went through (at 14 and 15) in trying to get my ears pierced...no matter what they used and how clean I kept the area, I still had an allergic reaction, and got infection to boot. One stud had to be removed from my ears with pliers...my ear had swollen up that bad. To this day, I have a knot in my left ear that is similiar to a cyst and nothing can be done about it. And, no, I can't wear earrings.

So why on earth risk all this on your babies or small children? My daughter is 5 1/2 years old and doesn't have her ears pierced. I guarantee you she's not concerned with it. Let the children grow up some and let them decide if they want to risk all this for holes in their ears!

I couldn't help noticing that someone commented about "modern day medicine...". For the record, I'm only 30 and what happened to me was only 15 years ago. It wasn't yesterday, but it wasn't the dark ages, either!

not only is it wrong to Peirce your kids ears for medical reasons it also is an invasion of the child's body - maybe your child doesn't want to have a whole in their ear and the parent has taken this decision form the child about his own body - let the child /adult decide what he wants to do with their own body
what would you think if your mother had a tattoo done to you when your are just a baby - this is the same thing
your right to think it's wrong

I have several piercings all over my body. I feel prettier with them. My whole family has pierced ears (husband, son, daughter) and I love how they look.

As a little girl, my mom felt the same way that you do and so I did get my ears pierced until I was grown up. I remember begging my mom to change her mind but she did not.

Piercings are decorations for the body.

I wonder why you did not remove the earring before your ear got so infected/inflamed. Perhaps that would have been a good idea. Some people have negative reactions/experiences.

Well... mine got pierced when I was a baby or toddler.... the backside of the earrings got swollen.... but nothing THAT bad happened.... they removed the earrings, the time passed by and the holes got clogged again.... one christmas, they got me a pair of earrings, and my uncle (pediatrician) pierced my ears, i could only use gold earrings after that... puberty came, i wanted to use all kinds of earrings, i got an infection, not serious, and i went back to the gold earrings.... then i started using normal earrings gradually, and now i'm happy using all kind of earrings now (i love them long!!).

If I had a baby girl, I would pierce her little ears... and take care of any reaction. If she grows up and doesn't want her ears pierced, she can only stop using earrings, and the holes will dissapear, as simple as that.

well, you're right... only because the kid won't remember the pain. I had my ears pierced when i was a baby... and i'm glad. because I had needles and babies don't even know what needles are. Plus modern day medicine will prevent from infections and stuff. It's just up to the parents to take the right precautions and keep up with the newly pierced ears.

I find it really disturbing when parents pierce their baby's ears. I believe some of it is cultural (a lot of Hispanic babies have their ears pierced) and some people just think it's cute. I did not pierce my daughter's ears and I'm so glad I didn't! She's 17 years old now and still doesn't have them pierced and doesn't want them pierced. She told me that she thinks it mutilation (and she's right, really) I just don't think it's right for parents to make that decision for their child - they should wait until when they're old enough to decide if they want holes in their ears. Like I said, I'm really glad I didn't 'mutilate' my daughter. She already has enough on me! LOL!

i had mine done when i was 8 and i had a bad reaction. i hasd to get them done again and now thre alright. Most people do it when there children are young because they think it looks good and for pain though it does not hurt much. I think ears piercing is nice but a couple of my friends have gone over bored having aroun 9 piercings.

Would you think twice about the necessity of circumcision? Or the need for an epidural? c-section?

These are also unnecessary procedures that many people do but never question. The risks involved are much higher yet many chose to do it anyway.

Most people don't have that problem... and it's easier to get them done when they're a baby because they're easier to clean and change and then the child gets used to it.

YOU ASK ME WHY? BECAUSE I THINK THE BABY CAN TOLIRATE THE PAIN ON HIS/HER EARS
