Carbon dioxide is a waste product of cellular respiration. That is any cell that is releasing energy from food will give it off. Plant cells respire 24/7 just like animal cells. The main difference is that plants can use some of that carbon dioxide to trap energy in the form of sugar. We call this process photosynthesis. Plants use more carbon dioxide than they use. If they did not we would be in a heap of trouble. By the way the oxygen does not come from the carbon dioxide but the water the plant needs to carry on photosynthesis.
