None of the above answers sound reassuring do they? Anway, I've gotten two - and I was terrified of dentists before them (probably that's why I needed to have two!)

Don't worry too much about it. They will numb the area then go to work. It isn't nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be. It is a bit time consuming because they have to clean out the roots but you can't feel a thing. If you do, ask them to stop and they should be able to give you more novicane. They may even give you two shots to start with. Just relax, you'll be fine. I guarantee you, if you have pain associated with the tooth that needs the root canal - the root canal itself is less pain. You'll feel better even as they are working on it because it relieves that pressure. The hassle is that you probably have to go for two or three visits because they put a temporary crown on and then you need to be fitted for a permanent one. Oh and your lips will probably dry out.

Seriously - go have it done and try not to worry!

A root canal is not that bad. You are numb and do not feel it. The tissue surrounding the tooth may be sore for a few days but that is because of the trauma the tooth has taken on. Just like hitting your hand may cause your bicep to be sore. Root canals have a bad name because they used to be done without being numb and going into the nerve chamber without being numb can make anyone go crazy, literally.
