Sometimes it's not a bad idea to take medication if it has helped in the past. Anxiety attacks are the worst. I have them, too. Maybe you just need a small dose of Xanax occasionally to ease the attack and help you to relax. Don't feel ashamed of having to take medicatons to "control" yourself. It is much better than suffering through the tough times and ending up an emotional wreck. Go and talk to your doctor and see what he/she has to say. Maybe there are some support groups close to you that might be worth looking into.

I'm really sorry you're going thru so much - I'm guessing that you're still pretty young. Have you tried alternative medicine? Some people swear by St. John's Wart to help them with depression and anxiety. You can buy it at any health food store. Also 'Rescue Remedy' is a really-really great supplement to aid in anxiety, which can also be bought at a health food store. OK, this might sound really basic, but do you exercise and eat a very well balanced diet? Exercise releases endorphins (those are the things that make you feel goooood) and I'm sure you know the benefits of eating well. Do you have any hobbies? Do you have a good group of friends ...or even one or two friends? Have you ever considered volunteering at a hospital or animal shelter, where you could help other people or animals who could probably really benefit from your experience with anxiety? Sometimes helping other people really gives us a good feeling inside. When I'm anxious, I try to keep myself busy by doing productive things....

Again, I'm sorry you're suffering. I wish you the best, I really do....

The way you're talking, it sounds like you DO still need the meds. I have these problems, too, and I won't go off my meds until I can be symptom-free for a full year. Also, remember that the attacks aren't your fault but the disorder. If you don't beat yourself up over having the attacks, maybe they'll lessen for you. If you're getting as better as you say, then be proud and hopeful that continuing your techniques will continue the progress. Good luck.

I too have been thru it all...distracting yourself really helps, exercise, cognitive therapy teaches you tools to use while you are experiencing it, have you heard of it? Read a book called Mind Over Mood, it's a great help!!!...it's a workbook.
Reading my Bible and prayer has been the absolute best thing for me though.
Also, if you need a little xanax or klonopin, what's the hurt? It helps you calm down and function better until you can learn to truly utilize the tools and techniques you have learned. One person told me that even when you are having "well" periods, to keep using your tools Every day! You will get thru this!!

HOnestly hun it doesnt sound like your ready to be totally off meds. Im not saying youll be on them for life but you can ruch it if your body isnt ready & still needs a little extra help then you should give it to it. Ive been on antidepressants since 1992 & finallyfor the first time my Doc & myslef feel that maybe I can be off daily meds. I'd been taking Buspar but they seemd to be making me more moody when I took them & Im feeling better off of them. I still keep my Xanax on hand for anxiety attacks because I get them pretty bad but xanax is only for attacks not daily dosing.....have you maybe tried just using something like Xanax for the times when you "need" it, like now when your overwhelmed or maybe when your brain just wont shut up & you cant sleep, then you could take a Xanax & it helps you to relax & be able to amintain yourself & get your head straight. I wish you the best & hope you get yourself on the right track!! GOOD LUCK!!

OK...I really believe this...I personally think wayyyyyy too many people are on meds. Two things...number one...excercise..I mean if I'm feeling stressed out there's no better natural high than playing a sport or going for a walk/run. Number two...focus big time on goals...make a list of goals and sub-lists on what you will do to accomplish it. You'll feel good and be so mentally busy that you won't have time to get depressed and have anxiety. Plus your self-esteem will go high. Good luck!

I'm certainly no expert ...but why not try some eastern type treatments. Wholistic remedies are much more widely practiced and accepted these days. Whether it's Yoga or some sort of natural vitamin supplement etc. there are stores and DR's. specifically for this. I have tried accupunture which worked (for a physical problem) where no western medicine helped at all. I should add that It was a physical symptom caused by mental stress... Try one or more of these new options....can't hurt!!

You don't sound like you are ready to be off meds - but that is your choice.

I suggest you take up swimming. 1: it forces you to control your breathing and that is something we anxious types need. 2: it is exercise, which helps to balance your brain chemicals. 3: It is rhythmic, helping you to empty out your brain - in a way, it's like meditation, except active ;o)

There are alternatives to prescription drugs - 12-18 grams of Inositol per day is excellent, though expensive. If it is avalable where you live, Kava is great.

Best of luck - this can be conquered!
