I had them. I also had a hereditary gap.
My dentist said that the gap may not close all the way, but they did.
My teeth were bad off. Like crooked and stuff.
Here's some tips:
*You can eat some hard things. Like small candies, just be VERY careful about the way you chew on them. DON'T EVER EAT SUCKERS! Because they will for sure, break.
*Gum's alright. Just not those huge pieces.
*Be sure you brush very well. Or else you'll get these spots on your teeth where your braces had been.
*They say floss, but I never did when I had mine because it was too hard. And nothings wrong with my teeth.
*You don't have to take a toothbrush to school, unless you want too. Your orthadontist will advise you to do that, but I never did. Just brush really well when you get home.
*Don't fiddle with your braces. They'll get loose and break.
*Don't grind your teeth hard, or else a bracket will break.
Uhmm...that's all I can really think about. If you want to know anything else, you can always IM me. :-)

Be prepared for a slimming session as well because when you first have your braces on, you may feel so uncomfy till you don't wish to eat for the 1st or 2nd day. 4 pre-molars will have to be extracted to close the gap. You'll also have to go for monthly adjustments of the wires too. Have to keep your teeth real clean each time after food.

Your aunt probably had porcelain veniers made that closed up her gap....if you have to get braces I would suggest Invisalign. They are clear and plastic and they slip on and off and that way you do not have to deal with the discomfort of wire and metal and all of that! :) The good thing about Invisalign is that they can even provide you with a whitening serum that you put inside the plastic caps that whiten your teeth throughout the day...they really are the best way to a movie star smile! :)

i had braces for quite the longest time, four years. my teeth didn't need them that much, but i had them on because I am constantly travelling... anyway, I suggest getting clear braces. metal braces can leave indents on your teeth and also white spots. the best advice for you is to get the clear braces. You won't look like you have a mouth full of metal, matter of fact, it would be hard to tell you were wearing anything on your teeth.
good luck
