Depends on how vaguely you define religion. Without religion people would still have goals and motivations and desires, and they would seek to fulfill these desires, and would ultimately examine our ability to fulfill these desires. Ultimately, some idea of purpose IS necessary, not as in divine purpose so much as motivation for action. In the most primitive sense, this could be considered religion (in that vulcan religion would be one based fully on "logic" so to speak)

If there wasn't any religion on Earth, than we wouldn't be going anywhere after we died, so we'd be just like the animals. We would eat, mate, sleep, relying on instinct and not on free will. I don't think there would be much self-examination going on.

Yes, I think so.... somehow humans seem to need religion.... we're so smart we need to know why for everything. When we figured out ourselves, we examined the world around us, then we tried to figure out why we were here and then the chaos ensued.
