Because the men, as the PROTECTORS of women, must protect them from things that are "unclean"--the staring of strange men, un-Muslim behavior, and dead bodies. Honestly, people, when will you stop believing blindly what stupid people say about Islam and just read their Koran?!?!?
I am not Muslim, but I almost became one. Research a religion before you put it down...

You say that you are familiar with Christianity. If so then you know that not all Christians are the same. There are different denominations with different practices and beliefs. Why then do you assume that all Muslims are the same? I've met a great many Muslim women in Muslim countries and seen many more walking down the street. Most don't wear the full covering you are referring to. Actually, the way you describe her dress is similar to what Hasidic Jewish women wear, only I'm pretty sure they aren't allowed to wear jeans. BTW, guys often wear long pants in the summer and we survive. Also, the material of the shirt makes a big difference. She may not be as uncomfortable as you think.

I've never come across this before as I've walked a few times to the cemetary for Muslim burials.

Muslim in the world have different culture.. There none like u say in my country (indonesia).
The reason why not woman go outside their house is because the woman not allowed to be seen outside without any cover (remeber the reason why Islam show in Arab), because all male in the desert are to wild and dangerous than any other male in the world (in the past.. but now.. who cares)
unlike christian female who will search another male to decrease their stress!! I respect muslim lady who will pray for their love!
To me.. Women not walk with their dead is because we (male) must carry the dead but not the female.. we.. the male have duty to carry the dead to grave.. in back of ours.. is the woman.

Because they are not considered as important as their men. And the men intend it to stay that way. I guess they're so weak they have to have their little power games. Strength does not lie in violence. It lies in living fairly with other people and treating them humanely. Just think, perhaps other people are humans too!
