Certain components of tobacco smoke, most notably byproducts of combustion (i.e. carbon oxides) are less abundant though not totally absent. (After all, the hookah's heat source *is* a charcoal briquette.)

On top of that, since the tobacco doesn't burn, the release of chemicals is slower.

This does not mean, though, that they ain't there. In the steamy smoke out the hookah, there most definately are some of the armomatic components of the tobacco present.

Research shows that the effect of smoking hookah may indeed be worse than smoking a cig, primarily because the softer smoke induces the smoker into believing that there's less impact, and the duration one smokes hookah is typically much longer than one draws on a cig.

I think all that matters is what's in the tobacco. Cigarettes are so deadly because of all the crap they add to it. When I lived in Israel, I smoked hookah all the time and I don't think there are any additives in the hookah tobacco they sell there.

I read somewhere that hookah contains more nicotine than cigarettes.

Well its unfiltered so it could be far worse, but there are also a lot less poisonous additives so it could be far better. Is that helpful?

It all depends on your attitude towards it. For about half it is a gateway drug to much harder stuff.
