Read the old testament (if you follow the 10 demands...commandments its valid). God screwed with Job, a man so devoted to him that he took it willingly, denied Moses the right to enter the promised land after he did his work for over 40 years, and destroyed cities and civilizations for not worshipping him the way HE saw fit.

There's also the fact that selling your daughter into slavery is encouraged (in exodus 21:7), as is the stoning of your disobedient child (deuteronomy 21:20-21).

Because some idiot televangelist tells them that God wants them to blow up or set fire to abortion clinics, gay / lesbian clubs, & to hate everyone who doesn't want to except their version of God's word. God hates the sin, he loves the " sinner ". Also, they hold on to the Old Testament version of God as a god of vengeance, war & violence, which is also an attribute of many other gods from other cultures - Greek, Roman, Babylonian, Egyptian. God is a god of LOVE, & a lot of this stuff happens because Man messes up & can be so STUPID & IGNORANT.

I would say because that is what they have been taught. I know that when I was a Catholic I was taught that God watches everything you do and if you get out of line then you will be punished. I was taught many times to fear God. I was taught also that if I lied that God would strike me with lightening. I grew up so afraid of storms it wasn't funny.

If god is love and goodness he's not omnipotent.

If he's omnipotent, he's apathetic to the vast amount of human suffering.

Take your pick. I'm agnostic, so I don't really care either way.

Because that's what I was taught in Sunday School - that I was constantly under scrutiny for every word, deed and thought, and that I should fear his wrath.

That's no way to teach love and goodness.

Your God created all that exists.
Evil exists.
God created evil.
Anything capable of evil cannot be benevolent.
Since God created evil, he can do evil.
Since God can do evil, he is not benevolent.
