Yeah, did you know that like 20 years ago some politician tried to pass a bill that gave tax breaks for business/persons that installed solar panels. But it didn't go through. This would of helped in many ways because by now solar panels wouldn't be so expensive and everyone could afford one. Who knows how much money this could of saved us! IDK maybe even gasoline prices.

Good topic

Yes it can - but the issue is that all technologies we have found to date to convert solar power in to energy is not efficient enough. For example, the solar cell which is considered the most efficient out of all inventions is only 4 % efficient. Imagine if we could get something going that would have at least 20 % efficient - Residential power could be sorted out by having each house on solar cells. - In today's context, if the whole roof is solar cells, still it will not be enough to power up the house in full.

The technology is still not perfected and is very expensive. It would take acres and acres of solar panels to produce as much energy as a small city would require. Also the panels don't charge if it is overcast.
Not to mention how big and heavy the batteries are and how many you need to store the energy.

Some people who can afford it do make enough energy to get of the electrical grid and power companies do pay for the the excess energy they produce.

Yes!! This isn't news to anyone. The problem is that the oil companies run the government. They don't want to see budget dollars go into research for alternate energy sources. That would be a big blow to their profits. Plus what would the politician do without their under the table kick backs. Until politics and big business get out of the same bed alternative energy will remain on the drawing board indefinitely.

It will take many different technologies to truly get us out of the mess we're in, but solar power is definitely one of them. In addition to the photovoltaic panels you see on rooftops, there are also concentrating solar power technologies ready to take off. Most of these are well over 20% efficient and can be made much cheaper than PV panels.
