The first inkling that nuclear war is imminent will result in Panic.
If you're not living in a large city (over 250,000) get as many food supplies as possible and head for the country, and hope the radioactive fallout from hits won't reach you, ie, don't be down wind from a major city or military installation.
Remember the movie, "the Day After,", people paniced in Kansas City, buying everything they could from the stores.
In a full scale nuclear exchange, 1 billion souls would be vaporized in the first 30 minutes, mostly in the US, Europe, Russia, China and Japan. Another 1.5 billion would die from radiation poisoning. The northern hemisphere would be plunged into prolonged agony and barbarity.
Eventually, the nuclear winter would reach the southern hemisphere and all plant life would be extinguished, followed by all animal life. Those living in underground shelters would need plenty of water and food to outlast the radioactive fallout...how long would that be?
Good question, better to be vaporized in the initial exchange.

WW III is over. It ended in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union.
WW IV, aka the War On Terror, aka the War Against Islamic Terrroism, is currently underway.
Everyone should have a disaster kit and area evac plan. The Red Cross is a good source for kits and information on disaster planning.
Another great source of information is the Department of Homeland Security.

you got a few more months to go, my friend.
And besides - I don't think a WWIII necessarily means a nuclear holocaust.
lets say N Korea nukes the American west coast.
I predict that every super power in the world would raid north korea at once until there is no one left - all without using nukes.
This is because no one wants a nuclear war.
If NK is dumb enough to try this - they will be destroyed, but not by nukes. By good ol' gunpowder and bombs.

Our religion teaches we should be ready for the future by trying to put aside:
one year food supply
enough money to pay our basic needs for 1 year.
house payment or rent, lights, gas ect.
one year supply of personal paper products, toiletries ect, clothes, fuel where possible ect.
world war 111 may or may not occur in our life time but, having at least part of a 1 year supply helps during all kinds of emergency situations - loss of job, illness, accident. It gives you something to fall back on if something should occur that you have no income for an extended period of time. We've used ours several times thru the years.

Get out of highly populated areas and move to a place with clean air water. Get a gun.
Pray.
I don't think there's too much any of us can do to prepare.

(I just LOVE the people who think they're so important that they can answer YOUR question with a question that either invalidates what you asked or completely ignores what you asked.)
That being said, you can't "prepare" for WWIII because 3 strikes and the human race is out.

The best form of preparation is to cope with being unprepared.
If you can do that, you can manage all eventualities.

What makes you think there will be a WWIII?
Where are you getting your information from?
What exactly do you want to prepare for?
