My Dad's father's family came to America in the 1700's from Scotland. Thet have been traced back in time in Scotland to the 11th century. My StepMother, who has a Doctorate in Library Science did a lot of the research. It is pretty extensive. I also know on my Mother's side, that I am descended from the American Indian. My own Mother is a Cherokee Indian. But I know nothing of that heritage.

Aren't we all of mixed race? (I had some ancestors that came over 1 year (1619) before the Mayflower called the Marigold) I also have family that came here on the Mayflower. I found out I'm a direct descendant of Pocahontas, and John Rolfe, through the Bollings in my family). My heritage consists of Cherokee Indian, Scot-Irish, German, French, and English. Lots' of Indian on both sides, German on my fathers side (both his parents and grandparents german), and French, English and Scot-Irish on my mothers side. I know I have a Rev War vet, and French-Indian war vets, famous fueds, and Civil War POW's and Col's in my family. My grandfather was in WWII and was decorated for his bravery. I have his WWII medals, he's even recieved some more in the past few years.

My maternal great grandmother's cousin traced our family roots back to France in (I want to say) the 1700's. I read the book she wrote on our family. I had no idea my family was interesting. The book did explain some things about why my family is so weird.
One of my mom's hobbies is geneology. Right now she's working on her dad's family. She found out that my great great great great(?) grandfather came over from Germany during the war. (which one I can't remember and my math sucks)
As I stated in one of my other posts, one of my ancestors was accused of his wife's murder after she botched her own abortion. This I think, was in the mid 1800's or something. My mom found that out through her research and old newspaper clippings.
I know a few other stories, that one easily the most depressing.
I know my dad's mother's family came over from Ireland, but that's all I know about my dad's family. But I'm sure it's just as bizarre.
If you like I could ask my mom how she went about it and email what she says. But I'm not really sure who she went to or anything.

I have so much family history and it is very diverse. Some rich relatives have been able to trace one line to Scotland and Ireland an then go there to find people who are related. One line goes back to Toward Castle in Scotland. The castle is now a ruins but I have a picture of it as it is now. Genealogy and writing Family History is my life. I am addicted. I knew one of my Great Grandfathers name but that was all I knew. I started searching for him five years ago. I found his passenger ship and passenger list when he sailed to America. I found him on the 1860 New york census. He was listed as a Hatter. Hatters made hats, I traced him to Utah. I found all info on him till he died in1905 and was buried in Parkvalley, Utah. I just got through writing his history. I found pictures of him on the net and also news articles in Ogden, Utah news paper and much more.

I got back to the 1800's on all lines, but on my exhusband's line, I ended up writing a book for his family! I traced his all the way to St. Francis Xavier! I used ancestry.com, rootsweb.com, and familysearch.org. I also used my library. I looked up obituaries, births, newspaper articles, etc. I am lucky enough to live in the same area that my ancestors helped to settle, so I have lots of info at my fingertips. Happy hunting!

Back to 1575. We are of Scottish descent from my mother's side. Five brothers for a revolution in Scotland and finally came to America where they were given 70 acres of land. Most of them lived in Williamson County, Illinois.

Most people in the USA are of mixed heritage, do you mean mixed race? If you look in your local phone book and locate a Mormon church near where you are they are very helpful with Genealogy. One of their goals is to trace the birth of every human being that ever lived. They are officially known as The Church of Mormon, Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints

I haven't done it personally, but my mother was big into a while back. From what I understand, you can start at genealogy.com(?) and go from there. I know there are discs you can buy as well. I know my mother also visited Salt Lake City, too, at the Mormon central of all places. I believe they have a lot of information there for some reason.

Back to the year 160 A.D. If you can get back past 1850 to about 1600, you can often link up your ancestors to someone who has already been thoroughly researched by a professional genealogist. I have found 3 Native-American ancestors of mine so far.
