Now I lay me down to sleep I pray the Lord my soul to keep and If I die before I wake I pray the Lord my soul to take Amen.....but then again I think your 4 yr old would start asking you questions about the if I die part so maybe you can change it a bit.Just pray something like Now I lay me down to sleep I pray the Lord my soul to keep I thank you lord for today so right now I pray please take care of me and those that I love I thank you up above I love you yes I do Good night don't let the bed bugs bite Amen.

Now I lay me down to sleep.
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
May Angels watch me through the night and wake me with the morning light.

I use this one with my kids rather then,

Now I lay me down to sleep.
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.

simply because while you want you kids to be aware of death, at a very young age it can become a real fear for them which I learned from experience with my eldest who is now seven. He went through a phase where he was really afraid that either he wouldn't wake up or that he would but mommy and/or daddy wouldn't. Now we all know as reasonable adults that this is a possibility but, to a two year old (which is how old he was at the time) this is a reason for paranoia. Bedtime became quite the episode at my house. With our second child we chose the first prayer for obvious reason, things went much better with her. Good luck.

I think its great you are trying to teach your 4 year old about God! Please don't be discouraged by the ones on here that have spoken out about their lack of faith in him. If they don't have an answer for your question they shouldn't say anything at all!

Anyhow, now that I've said that let me get to the question you asked. With my 3 year old we started her on the Now I lay me prayer but moved to the Lord's prayer, Our Father.... she has a great memory and knows that one well, so I don't know exactly what kind your looking for but I'm sure you will be amazed by how much they can remember! It will surprise you the one day he/she says the whole prayer by them self! Take care! God Bless you and your family!!!

With my three children (3, 4, 5) we talk about what we have done during the day and then we incorporate that in our prays. This way the children are actually involved in the pray it makes it more meaningful to them. We start out by saying thank you for this day, thank you for all the members of the family (naming each one, including grandparents). My children have mention such things as the food that we have ate or toys that they have. They even mention things like going to the park. They mentioned things about people that are sick (such as people in our church) or even the rain that we have had. The last thing that we say is thank you Jesus for keeping us safe and healthy. Please watch over us and guide us throughout our days. Jesus name, and everyone says AMEN!

You would be surprised at what children think about and their minds expand each day. My children remind me more and more of the things that I should be thankful for through this time that we share together. If they get stuck on what to pray about or run out of ideas then just proceed to the ending statements. Your child will let you know if he was not finished by adding just one more thing.

The best thing to instill in your child is the confidence in talking with God, be comfortable if your child sees that you are comfortable talking to him then he will be at ease to continue to do in life.

I pray to the Lord, my soul to keep
If I die before I wake
I pray to the Lord, my soul to take
