We rescued quite a few cats and unfortunately one in particular brought it in my room and I was the main one that got bit up. To the point I have blemishes on my legs/ankles that will never go away. Very unattractive and annoying.

My fiance put down Salt all over the floors in every room. Let it sit for 2 and half days. (best to wear sandals or something during this time) that dried up the egg's. We bought some pet flea spray from Pet smart and the vet, bathed them and placed it on them. Did this for a course of 2 months straight.

Now, we don't have many flea's. They are more controlled and bit once in awhile.

Bug spray is another thing to use on the body. However, a person can become skin irritant or bugs/fleas come immune.

Vacuum at least twice a day.

Wear protective clothing.

Contact local health officials.

You need to remove the fleas. If you have pets treat them for fleas with a spray such as Frontline. You will also need to treat your home. For this I recommend that you go to the grocery store and purchase 20 Mule Team Borax (laundry detergent isle).

Take an empty coffee can. Pop lots of little holes in the alumnium bottom (to make a shaker). Pour the borax in and sprinkle all areas of your house. It is safe for pets and humans. You can apply it to your rugs and furniture. Let it sit for 24 hours and then vacuum it up. Repeat this process again. The borax will kill the adult fleas that are on the carpet as well as any eggs.

Remember to throw away the vacuum bag, or empty immediately as the flea eggs inside could still hatch.

Here are some natural home remedies that work if the infestation isn't too bad. I especially think the borax and lemon scented dawn work real well. The key is to treat your animals and home as quickly as possible. We live by the beach and have lots of sand so there are lots of fleas in the area. I vacuum every single day and treat all my animals every month. I'm saving my money to get wood floors throughout the house because I think carpets are a breeding ground.

I am going to state the very obvious here, but to stop fleas biting humans you first need to treat the animal that has the fleas, preferably with something from your vet, ie.Programme or Front-line, I believe you can actually but Front-line without prescription now! don't forget to treat carpets/upholstery etc the little critters get everywhere!!
Now back to your original question, Citronella oil is good to keep most bugs away inc fleas and mosquitoes.
Good luck!!

You have to treat the animal and the environment. Call you vet if you have fleas bc of your pet. They will recommend everything that's safest and most efficient. You must do it all, there are no short cuts to solving the flea problems. Also be aware that if you have any respiratory problems or asthma/allergies to consult your own Doc first just in case.
