Truly, there is nothing like the night sleep, for example if you stay awake late at night then sleep in that is OK too
Years ago, I had a night job where I worked all night and slept during the day
I never fell so good in the five years I held on to that job.
It appears that during the night we slip into a deeper sleep unlike the day sleep.
Also, as was mentioned in one of the above answers, that exposing ourselves to sunlight gives us the natural vit. D which is needed to metabolize the Calcium we intake, that is another reason vit. D is always added to the calcium
Calcium without vit. D is not absorbed.
If you can help it, try to have a day time job and have your beauty sleep at night otherwise to the best you can, may be catch up some decent sleep over the weekend,
Good luck,
Macho

I guess this depends if you work at an all night job then you have no choice, but it is healthier to sleep in the evening than in during the day light. In the evening most people don't exercise or eat properly. They also do not have to many people to communicate with. During the day is when 95% of the people are awake, exercising, communicating, and eating a different varity of foods to try and keep themselves healthy. Another thing is when you see light you feel more alive. When you see darkness you feel alone and depressed. Well, I feel that way any how. So, I guess my answer would be yes we should sleep at night, but some of us have important jobs that won't allows us to.

Sleep is essential to health and general well-being, but it doesn't matter when one gets that sleep. A lot of people are diurnal (awake during the day, asleep at night) because that's how a lot of the modern culture works. Also, it's just easier to see stuff when the sun is out. But there are also a ton of nocturnal (sleep during the day, awake at night) people who function just as well. All in all, you'll be fine as long as you get the appropriate amount of rest. It's not like you'll die if you set foot outside your house after dusk.

Check out studies done on Circadian Rythym. Really fascinating stuff.

To answer your question, I think that there is no harm in sleeping during the day and getting up at night as long as it isn't a prolonged habit or lifestyle.

Sunlight helps your body synthesise Vitamin D. Also some studies have shown deprivation of sunlight to coincide with depression. But yes, you can sleep at day and live at night. Just make sure you either take vitamin D supplements or expose yourself to a source of full spectrum light.

I work third shift (11pm-8:30am). I almost always sleep during the day. Usually I go to bed around noontime. That way I am able to get some sunlight. Nighttime is my "daytime". I am surviving just fine. :-)
