Not the best answer, but the simple fact is that there isn't a simple answer. Religion fulfills a lot of psychological needs that can't otherwise be addressed. It fills a need for a sense of community, it creates a sense of order out of a world that even in this modern age is still greatly not understood, and it provides us with a sense of self worth.

Basically, if you're serious about having your question answered you need to read

Religion Explained: The Evolutionary Origins of Religious Thought by Pascal Boyer

I'm just finishing it up. A bit of a tough read for someone if they don't have a decent understanding of psychology but it's well worth it if you want to understand not only religion but our society as well.

It's not something that could never exist. It will always, and without it, the world would be very morbid. I believe it gives everyone a way to feel connected to the human race, in a beautiful way. To remember that their are strong feelings that we all have that are similar, and that despite how different we may seem, we share many things in common. Plus, for many being a part of a religion can give someone a guidance, support, and hope in all their spiritual and moral beliefs. So they do not feel so alone and can build a stronger relationship with whatever they believe in.

What is the "need". I think your heart would tell you that. Is it empty? You probably need something to follow. And, like someone else, something to hold on to.

The basic human NEED for religion is PEACE in Ones heart.

Dictionary: Religion.
the belief in and worship of a super human power.

Bible: Jam 1:26
If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion [is] vain.
Jam 1:27
Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, [and] to keep himself unspotted from the world.

The meaning of religion is persoanl to every individual, religion is a set of Dogma, or rules, on how to form a relationship with something greater than ourselves, spirituality, often confused with religion, is how someone realtes on a personal level with their God and with the world and the people around them. I believe it is a part of human existance to have a belief in something other than ourselves, and that much good can come from the search for meaning

You should read Nietzche, a great German Philosopher, he states that religions are just a way to gain power and control others, on the other hand Marx (father of comunism) said religions are activities that make people distracted from other escential things. I guess people just need something to hold on...

Religion in all of its forms, exists only to establish the rules for a "civilized" society. It defines right and wrong, and thru the promises of "heaven" or "hell" (insert the appropriate terms for each individual religion here) it helped keep the common man in line.

You make it sound like religion is just a small part of this world and nothing else. Religion is the reason for the world. God made us to glorify him. That is the reason
