We have this cute little dog part Bijon part Pekinese who is three yrs old now. Whenever we try to pet him he runs away sometimes it seems that he is scared. We had never harmed him why does he not like to be touched. He only comes to us when he wants to. Does anyone else have this situations with their dog.

Your dog is hand-shy - which usually means he has been abused. Is it possible that someone else has struck him in anger? It doesn't take much for a dog to become scared of being hit. Also, unless you had him since birth, you don't know how he was treated in the first few weeks of his life.

Other reasons for hand shyness can include blindness setting in; all of a sudden, his vision is not so good and he just sees something coming at him - he doesn't know if it's friend or foe. But since you say he "always" runs away, it sounds more like a learned reaction.

The best you can do is try to entice him to be petted, using food as a reward. Each time you pet him, reward him with a small, healthy treat. If he runs away or, worse, tries to snap, then no treat. Do not yell at him or scold him - he sounds very small and insecure. If all else fails, ask your vet to recommend a good dog trainer, who will help you modify the little guy's behaviour and hopefully make him less afraid.

Good luck, and be patient! You sound like a great dog-ma.

If this behavior just developed take him to the vet as he has a medical problem in all probability. If you just got him, (sounds like you have had him for a while) it will take time for him to become adjusted to you. I've never had a dog that I have had for a while suddenly become scared although I've seen similar instances and it was from a medical problem. The only other reason something like this could happen were if someone were doing something malicious to him when he's out of your sight.

Your dog gets startled easy.HE is a nervous dog alright. If possible try to make sure that you sleep right by hes side at night even if you have to move several times .Even if its on the floor. It will help because that way maybe he can bond with you .It will help with bonding.Make sure you talk to him all-day when your home like he is a baby that might help loosen him up.My dog is not nervous but he is a snob and he gets like that.sometimes to get your dogs attention to sit with you make him jealous like baby talk to one of his toys.I hope this helps.Good luck.

No my dog is not like that. A couple of times he got in the garbage. Then we had to punish him for that and he chew up my stuffed animals. But that's all he does. My dog is an Yorkshire Terrior.
