Funny... I've run into about the same percentage of friendly and not-so-friendly people in both cities.

I've never been to New York but I live in San Francisco..and I can tell you after having lived here for 25 years, you are absolutely correct - whether people in San Francisco are friendly or not depends on what their perception is of you. Despite the rep, San Francisco is FAR from sophisticated or known for hospitality. Service is rude to substandard most places. Despite how the average San Franciscan likes to tout this city as being "so cosmopolitan, 'tres elegante', so worldy-wise", the truth is that people here are just as racist as anywhere else in the country. They just think that their form of it is OK. i.e. it's OK to bash certain minorities, but not others. They are also great at labeling. No one here can relate to you unless they know your "nationality", "your ethnic background", your "ancestral homeland", etc...etc...etc..... If you don't spout the leftist mantra, everyone gets real nervous and starts looking down at the floor or shuffling their feet. Don't say you believe in the death penalty or the crowd goes dead silent. Also, this is a very transient town. People come and go...and those who stay just spout the rhetoric. One thing you can be sure of....people just spout whatever the politically correct thing is for them to spout...but the truth is they don't even believe in anything they're saying. They just wanna look hip cool. Also they actually have a very small town/small mind mentality as they've constantly got to stick their nose into your business and nobody wants to be bothered with you unless it IS to mind your business. I'm not really sure how it is that San Franciscans have labelled this town as being more sophisticated than everywhere else considering most of the people who call themselves "natives" never travel anywhere. I mean, just who are they comparing themselves to? And by whose standards (other than their own) are they supposed to be so damned "sophisticated, cosmopolitan, cultured....yap yap yap"?

whats the point in being friendly to someone you are probably never going to see again? when i'm going to work, doing errands, etc. i dont have the time to be friendly. i have to be friendly and polite to ppl all effing day at my job, when i'm not at work its too much effort to be nice to everyone.

I think part of it has to do with all the hills in SF. I would be angry if I had to climb tose hills each day too.
