Well ummm ARE you too thin?
If you are dieting you should be eating every few hours anyway, bring your food or learn to order off a menu so you can eat something with them. when they are eating and you are not it is perceived as a type of rebuff, that you won't break bread with them. So eat with them even if it is something simple .

Just put a small amount on your plate. If in a restaurant, order a salad. I know what you mean. If they find you dieting they can't leave it alone. Don't tell. I find when I diet it is best not to tell anyone. Let it be your secret. If you do bash and eat too much only you will know and the next day get back on track again.

You should be eating more frequently if you want to lose weight. Eat 6 small meals rather than 3 main meals. So they shouldn't notice you not eating, because you should be eating!

Eating any less than 1600 calories a day puts your body into starvation mode. Once you do that your body holds onto fat because it thinks food is scarce. You can permanently ruin your metabolism this way. Eat frequently and your body knows there's plenty of food and it lets go of fat storage. This is all assuming that you are even overweight.

Be thoughtful and nice about it, and try to keep the mood friendly (as if you're talking about something else, not feeling sorry for her for hurting her feelings). Let her know that you considered it for some time and want to stay friends. I don't think you should be making further excuses when this is the core reason. Above all, DON'T ACT DIFFERENTLY around her! There is nothing worse than this and will make her lose respect for you and feel crummy. Make sure she knows that you are concerned and really really still want to be friends, and this will make it easier for her accept your decline.

tell them you're on a diet. and learn how to spell. additionally, dieting isn't about not eating, it's about eating the right foods. you could have a healthy snack with them. like celery or carrot sticks, maybe a cheese stick, something like that.

When you are around friends it gets a little difficult sometimes to follow a diet. I think if they are your close friends, just have a frank discussion with them that you are on a diet and they will understand and not make fun of you.
Hope this helps.

Is there a reason other than not eating around them that they think you're starving yourself? It sounds like they're worried that you might be going overboard and getting TOO skinny.

"No, thank you" should do it. No polite person would demand or expect any further explanation.

That said, if you want to maintain a healthy weight, you need to eat regularly. If your friends are so insistent, maybe you are seriously underweight, which is just as unattractive and unhealthy as being seriously overweight and, in the short run, much more dangerous.
