Actually, the Holy spirit was at the conception and baptism of Jesus as well.

holy spirit (NIV)

Luke 1:35
35The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. (NIV)

Matt 3:16
16As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him.
(NIV)

Some theories to why he does not really make an impact until Pentecost is the timeline of the trinity theory.
The Father first dealt with man then Jesus came now the time of the holy spirit followed by Jesus return and then the judgement of the father

In the NT the Greek language structure has the article, The, totally omitted,,,,in other words, the way the translation should read is 'spirit holy" . Since the early Christian apologists needed to create a specific third person for the god head of the trinity, the article "The" was inserted in later copy of the letters and gospels as one of many corrections to the earlier manuscripts, as well as reversing the order of the two words, from spirit holy, to holy spirit, or The Holy SPirit. This order of language structure is of course not satisfactory to Trinitarian apologist, necessitating the reversal and inclusion of the artticle.

However one of the gospel fiction author/s unknown, did have his Jesus character Breath spirit holy on his disciples....while one of the other unknown authors of the gospel fiction (Lk) specified that the disciples were to receive this spirit some time after Jesus was to ascend...which came to be part of the doctrine of Pentecostal apologetics, the anointing of fire and glossalia. Sincerely

The Holy Spirit is the third party in the Trinity. He was always there from the beginning. But Jesus said in John 14 that after He goes back to His Father, He will send the Comforter. That is the Holy Spirit will come as a special person into your life to abide in you and guide you in every way.

The Holy Spirit has always been around. You are getting confused by the miracle of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit gave the disciples the ability to speak in languages they did not know. That was not the first appearance of the Holy Spirit in the world. It was simply a special appearance.

EDIT: Laughing Ben doesn't know Greek or else he wouldn't have written his silly response. He has obviously been influenced by a cult which opposes the belief in the Trinity of God, but he is wrong about the history of the Greek text.

Do you mean why wasn't He present as an indwelling presence in believers? Because He was present before Jesus was crucified.

Luke 1:41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,

Luke 1:67 And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying,

The Holy Spirit couldn't become an eternal indwelling presence in believers until after Jesus had sanctified them by the shedding of his blood. Before that He could only come upon or "fill" them for a time. He couldn't join his Holy essence for all eternity with a person who was still under condemnation from God for their sins.

Apparently you have not read the account of Jesus baptismal.
When Jesus came up out of the water the Holy Spirit ascended like a dove upon Him, and a voice from Heaven said, "this is my son in whom I am well pleased."

Or the creation account.

I suggest you lean how to read before you try to act smart.
