Never seen them in NY, but when I was 12 we sat on the steps of the capitol building and watched them explode over the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and the reflection pond. The national orchestra played patriotic music. I've seen a lot of fireworks since then and none have compared. It was really a great experience that I have always treasured.

I love to travel so I have been lots of places for the 4th of July. Here is my ranking based on the fire works display, the city's ability to entertain with bands, bathrooms, food stands, etc. and the crowds overall reaction to the activities:
1. Boston - WOW - Fireworks and the Pops go together.
2. NYC - Amazing over the Statue of Liberty - gives me chills just remembering it.
3. Washington, DC the days activities were great - historical characters, plenty of actvities and the parade is grand - fireworks ok - but you are in the Nations Capital - everyone must experience this at least once.
4. Mount Rushmore - cool experience - no large crowds, just you and the mountain with leaders looking on you. Moving experience - makes you realize how lucky we are!
Hope this helps!

It used to be fun to go the mall in DC, but now there're security gates and getting in and out is controlled. Not the big party scene it used to be.
Maybe NY is better now.

Detroit/Windsor, Canada
It's for freedom day in Canada too. They used to always claim the biggest fireworks show in North america.
