Is the NLT better than the NIV and other modern Bible versions?

its more complicated than that. there are different kinds of translation. for example the king James Bible is a literal translation meaning that it is translated word for word. that sounds good but sometimes it can end up in confusing passages with things lost in the translation. then you have bibles like the niv that translate a phrase at a time. this can help get to the meaning a little easier because they are basically translating the meaning of what is being said.

There are many great modern translations. Forget the KJV. The language was fine for 400 years ago, but it is not Modern English and the translation really isn't that good. You can also forget the New World Translation by the Jehovah's Witnesses, it's a very bad "translation". The translator had a very poor command of Greek and the whole thing is biased toward Jehovah's Witness theology.
The best translations for scholarship are the New Jerusalem Bible, the Revised English Bible, and the New Revised Standard Version. For a more conservative translation, you can go with the New International Version or the New American Standard Bible (1992 update) or the New American Bible. If you want a good translation with some very contemporary language, The Message is a real gem as well as the New Living Translation.

That depends on what your criteria is that fit the word "best". For readability and ease of understanding I like the NLT. The Second Edition is certainly a marked improvement over the 1996 version. But there is one particular version I REALLY like, it's called The Great Book, the Plain English Bible. It's a real translation and very accurate. For example, almost every Bible translate Hebrews 13:17 as "Obey your leaders and submit to them..." but the Great Book translated it as "Be persuaded and yield to those.." which is the most accurate translation. If you have ever read this book, you'll like to read it again and again. I have already given away a number of them. A pity they do not have it in the OT.

Well, obviously being the Caveman you can probably guess that I am old school and my favorite is still the original King James Version, however, both the NLT and NIV versions are good. I personally have a version of the NIV I use to decipher scripture that I have trouble understanding. It provides clarity and breaks down the word in every day language. Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with either book. It all comes down to personal preference. This is the Caveman signout and swinging his club for Jesus!!!! Peace! Ohhh Yeaahh!!! I think that the NIV translation is the best translation of the Bible that is easy for us in this present age to comprehend what happened in the past. NLT is a more modern version, it's written in simplier english for the readers now to understand.

New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures is the most accurate up to date translation of the Bible available from Jehovah's Witnesses.

Sorry to cross post but you asked a question in dogs a few moments ago and then deleted it while I was typing so I wasn't able to help. In concern for your dog I am posting my answer to your question here. Please be understanding fellow patrons, I care only about this individuals dog and his/her best interest.
If you like the dog and would like to keep her why not have a friend or someone you can trust take your dog for a few days without telling your daughter your plan. See if she doesn't suddenly miss her/him. Obviously we hope that she does in which case you can magically bring her back. If the plan doesn't work then it would be up to you if you wanted to take responsibility for the dog. Just know if you do decide to take her in, the facility can destroy her within 3 hours of you signing her over if they don't have room. Also if you put a free advertisement many labs look in the free pages and take dogs into horrible conditions. The people may seem like a nice, well dressed couple but they simply are going to kill your puppy.

The New American Standard, stands above all other translations/ transliterations.

Stick with the KJV, it is by far the closest translation to the Hewbrew and Greek... if there is a word you don't know look it up.
