you should wait awhile and get to know the person, or if you know the person through a friend you'll be fine, it also depends on the person,how do you think that person would react. also people want to have alot of friends on face book any way. If it is the opposite sex go for it, if it is the same sex wait awhile

may be when that friend of yours asks himself or just wait for a month or so and when you feel he is trustworthy , grab an opportunity to invite him..i hope you get it..
