If you're an xenophile or just because you're interested in Asian culture-have you ever gone to visit? And, what did you like most and least about it?

I'm a Canadian living in Japan. Japan has some very cool points - they try so very hard to keep traditional ways and values. Every day you can see people (mainly woman) walking around in Kimonos. Sushi is quite tastey (although there are a few things i still won't try like raw baby cuttlefish (whole)). Sumo is a fantastic sport to watch, very exciting once you learn the rules (easy), and it is a good way to learn the language. Fantastic tech products too.
Japan's downsides are it's narrowness of vision - people are xenophobic - the spaces beside me are always the last to fill up on the train. Education sucks - it's necessary to go to study school after regular school hours to get ahead and into a good school (this is from kindergarten on up, people; no joke!). The communter trains and elevators are terribly packed at rush hour and the fares are unfairly expensive. People always seem to be killing eachother here - there's always something in the news. Mostly happens within the family unit, but there are also lots of revenge and random murders too.

If i didn't have young children about to enter grade school, I'd love to stay in Japan. It really is a nice country once you get out of the metropolitan areas. As it is, I'm gettin outta here!

To be honest, I'm very interested in China, but that led to my interest in Japan as well. I really hope to visit there one day. I especially love the food, the dress, anime art, and their high standards (although the idea of hara-kiri and the "death before shame" concept is a bit unsettling...) I think the stuff I wouldn't like about Japan prob. would be the influence of porn and sexuality; I have heard of some MAJOR weird games over there, cases of harrassment (men harrassing women), and also, a lot of modern Japanese fashions are... *ahem* "unique." But other than the "weirdness" of Japan and its crowded spaces, I think I'd like it very much. If I could live somewhere in the countryside, away from the cities, that'd be even better.
