Because all their friends have boyfriends/girlfriends and teenagers HATE being different from their friends in any way. I agree, that's a stupid reason, but that's the reason.
It's like I told my husband tonight when we were discussing a dumb thing our 16 year old did, she's 16...show me a 16 year old on the planet with common sense. They don't have it.
