This happened a while ago but it still bugs me. This kid in our class doesn't read too well and the teacher started making fun of him in front of the whole class. So when I got sick of hearing it I told him to shut up and act like the old guy we all knew he was. Then I got sent to the principles office. When I refused to apoligize to him I got in worse trouble. Why didn't the teacher get in trouble? Isn't it the teachers job to help the student and not make fun of them?

As a teacher, I am appalled that any teacher would make fun of a student in front of the entire class.

If your teacher continues to do this, I would recommend you go to your guidance counselor or your assistant principal. Those people are part of your school's administration and they are responsible for making sure teachers don't cross such lines.

I suggest going to these people, because it sounds like you have already soured the relationship between you and your teacher enough. Besides, if your teacher is going to be humiliating your classmates, it is likely that he won't be willing to listen to you in the first place.

As far as the teacher getting in trouble goes, you have no idea what has happened when you weren't around. It's quite possible the teacher was called into your Principal's office for a reprimand, just as it's possible the principal considered a student causing a disturbance in class to be making false accusations and said nothing to the teacher. This is why you have to keep your cool.

Your principals have to go through alot more school than your other teachers and must have quite a few year's worth of experience before they can attain the positions they have. They got where they are by being intelligent, calm, and professional. To reach them when a teacher is being unfair, unreasonable, or unprofessional, you must keep your cool.

You got into trouble for doing the same thing the teacher did: making fun of someone in front of the class. Unfortunately, for you, you also challenged the authority of the teacher and the school when you called the teacher on his gross unprofessional conduct.

In the future, when you witness a teacher behaving badly, try not to embarrass the teacher in front of everyone. Wait until after class and ask the teacher why he or she chose to belittle a student in front of everyone. Do so in a respectful manner and even express your own embarrassment at having witnessed the teacher ridiculing the student.

If you feel that the action of the teacher requires immediate intervention, try to intervene in a manner that does not directly challenge the authority of the teacher. In your case, pick up reading where the other student stopped, even if that includes reading loud enough to talk over the top of the teacher’s voice. If the teacher tells you to stop, then obey and handle the problem later.

Your principal likely dealt with the teacher out of your presence. I cannot imagine a principal not investigating the action that lead to your intervention. You may never know what action the principal took as it is none of your business. That is an issue between the employer and the employee. If you feel strong enough about teacher misconduct, speak to your parents and get them involved. A call from a parent usually has more sway with the principal than a complaint from a student.

The biggest lesson for you is to remember to avoid challenging authority in a way that embarrasses the authority figure. Give the authority figure the benefit-of-the-doubt and allow him or her to correct his or her own actions. Sometimes you cannot avoid the challenge; therefore, you must accept the consequences.

Good luck!

WOW I really dont think that was fair. What u did was brave, and i dont think i would have the guts to do that but thank god for guys like u. U r right the that is not a teachers job to do that. I would talk it over with my parents and let them talk to the school board.Probably the reason y he didn't get in trouble was bcuz he is an adult and most adults tend to blieve adults but yet if u have witnesses then that can also help u.Well good luck and let me know what happens.

It is the teachers job to help and not make fun of them. The principle wouldn't discipline the teacher or admonish him or her because it admits fault. Schools are sued over a lot less. You want to get the teacher in trouble then tell the kids parents and let them raise a stink. Or talk to a investigative reporter. They love to make peoples lives hell.

Absolutely!! I'm surprised you didnt get any support from your principal. I'd take it to the next level. The school board/district. Get your parents involved cause if your intent on making sure this idiot teacher of yours knows he wrong, you'll probably be in for a little fight. No student should be made fun of for thier learning curve. I applaud your standing up for him to by the way.

The teacher should have totally got in trouble. You should go to the kids parents, the school board and maybe even the media..Disabled people's advocates might also help (even if the kid isn't learning disabled) because they might worry he would do the same thing to disabled kids. Good luck!!

Well.
It's true that the teacher should help.
Have you ever thought that the teacher was doing it on purpose? So that he would be embarassed, and once he learns how bad it is to not learn, not to mention embarassed. He would try to learn a little harder, gain a little more knowledge, and try not to embarass himself.
Also, I know that the teacher cares. That's why they're doing this for his own good.
