Sin, in a nutshell, is doing something that distances you from God.

As a person reaches the age of reason, he/she in a given situation reviews the teachings he/she received from their parents, and community, and takes a action that will be favorable to GOD, and him/herSELF. Taking an action that knowingly is against what has been taught, and understood is sin.
SIN is the WILLING disobedience of established norms or rules protecting the general welfare of the community a person lives. Having FREE WILL each person maintains their own actions - if you can control your actions in any given situation you may be concidered an mature adult, if not then the community you live in steps in and provides instruction to correct the offence (jail).
If you live in a community where anything goes - then there are fewer sins, (there are no such places).

There's only one definition of sin. That's unbelief." What is sin? Unbelief. I want somebody to tell me one definition of sin besides unbelief. "He that believeth not is condemned already." Committing adultery is not a sin. Smoking cigarettes and drinking is not a sin; that's the attributes of unbelief. If you was a believer you wouldn't do that. That's exactly right. See, there it is, unbelief. What is it? "If we disbelieve willfully," that's you out here tonight Presbyterian, Methodist, or you without the Holy Ghost. "If we disbelieve willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sin."
