Sweeter than you may be able to tolerate

Title: Treacle Tart
Yield: 1 Servings

Ingredients

------------------------------PASTRY-----------------------------------
2 oz wholewheat flour
2 oz self-raising flour
1 oz lard
1 oz margarine or butter
1 pn salt
1 cold water; to mix

-----------------------------FILLING-----------------------------------
4 oz wholewheat breadcrumbs
5 tb golden syrup and 1
-tablespoon black; treacle
1 milk to glaze

Instructions

(taken from an old family recipe, but updated with the correct measurements from Delia Smith's Complete Cookery Course)

Pre-heat oven to gas mark 5, 375F or 190C. Lightly greased 8" loose-based fluted flan tin

Make up the pastry, leave to rest in the fridge for 30 minutes. Roll out thinly and line the tin, cutting off the trimmings and keeping them on one side.

Measure out the treacle and syrup and mix in breadcrumbs thoroughly. Put the mixture into the pastry case.

Roll out the trimmings and cut strips long enough to make a criss-cross pattern all over the surface of the tart. Brush strips and edges lightly with the milk, place tart on a baking sheet in the oven and bake for about 30 minutes. Served with whipped cream.

Enjoy (and don't get on the scales afterwards!)

A Treacle Tart is a traditional British dessert with a rich sugary filling in a pastry casing, traditionally with a lattice of pastry strips on top

Here is the recipe (The longest and best way):

Pastry
1 1/4 cups flour
1 pinch salt
1/4 lb butter, chilled
2 tablespoons superfine sugar
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 tablespoons ice water
Filling
1 teaspoon lemon zest
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1 cup golden syrup
2 tablespoons lemon juice
Garnish
whipped cream

Prepare the pastry as for pie crust and chill for 30 minutes.
Roll out for a 9 inch tart pan. Reserve the scraps. Trim the edges and retain the scraps.
Preheat oven to 400°F.
Mix the oats, zest, and ginger, and sprinkle half in the pastry. Pour on the syrup and lemon juice and sprinkle rest of oat mixture on top.
Roll out any remainining pastry and cut strips to lay a trellis over the tart if desired.
Bake for 30 minutes and serve hot or cold

Treacle Tart (Easy):

50g (2oz) fresh white breadcrumbs
140g (5oz) rich short crust pastry
6 tbsp Golden Syrup
1 lemon (zest only)
1 tsp lemon juice

Preheat oven to 200°C; 400°F: Gas 6.
Put the syrup into a saucepan with the breadcrumbs, lemon rind and juice and heat gently until just melted.
Allow the mixture to cool.
Roll out the dough and line an 8 inch baking dish.
Pour in the syrup mixture.
Roll out the dough trimmings and cut into long, narrow strips.
Arrange them in a lattice pattern over the filling.
Bake for 25 to 30 min or until the pastry is slightly browned.
Serve hot or cold.

This old-fashioned favourite was originally made with treacle, but golden syrup is the more usual ingredient today.
