the main function of grounding is to give protection to humans and bypass the high voltage transiants to earth by some means.

suppose say your iron box is giving shock. if ther is a 3pin plug for your iron and the house wiring is withh earth you wont get shock. the 3rd pin in the iron box plug is given to its body which we/user supposed to touch it. when ever current leakage is there and when you touch the body of iron current has two paths to go in to ground. One is from your body and other one is through 3rd pin of iron plug and 3rd hole of socket and the into the earth.

current will choose the shortest/easiest path always. like ourself we always choose easiest way

our resistent(force to oppose the current) is very high compared to copper wires used in wiring. so current will flow through the 3rd pin but not through human. thus we are protected.

The ground socket conects to the parts of the electrical device that you touch while using it. So if for some reason one of the live wire came into contact with those parts it would carry the fault current to ground and trip the breaker and save the user.

It's the most important part of the socket, without it, if a fault occurred, the fault current would flow through your body to earth and probably stop your heart beating.

To protect the user from Electricution(shock ) Any electrical appliances like cooking Range ,Iron box produce power Leakage in its metallic portion. If that body is connected to ground wires the Leakage voltage will not affect our body.If the Leakage level is more it will trip the circuit breaker ( Earth Lekage circuit Breaker if fitted in circuits). In Electrical power supply Transformer the neutral point is grounded,so in case of any one phase of the power supply is grounded it will cause high current flow & trip the circuit.(Earth behaving like a conductor so earthing is essential in all electrical equipments)

It provides an alternate path for current if a fault happens, and it may save your life, because otherwise the path could be you.
