A few weeks ago, i found a lump on my golden labrador foot,
It gradually got bigger so on Tuesday i took her to the vets.
The vet said he didnt like the look of the lump, so it will have to come off!
Thing is, Gypsy (my dog) was 8 in May and she is quite overweight, so obviously there is more of a risk with regards the anaesthetic.
Do i take her down, let her have the operation with all the risks or should i speak to the vet before shes due to have the operation, and ask him to be honest with me? Either way im scared of the thought of losing her and dont know what to do for the best.

.I have been through this myself soooooo!many times. At age five my dog had surgery than at age eight he had two grapefruit size lumps removed. At age thirteen last year he had alot removed. It is always very scary.Make sure you do the pre-blood test to make sure its safe to due surgery. It costs more but it is well worth it.That blood test can save your dogs life.because its when the dogs under is where the risk is and the blood work tells alot.Pray every chance you get everyday and night .Ask ever one around you to do it to. Also when you drop your dog off stay with her until they have to force you out of there.Make sure you leave her a blanket with your scent on it.Always talk to the vet before the surgery .We also just had another family dog thats 8 years old and over weight and he did great.Just remember to do the blood work first. My parent did the blood work on there little dog before they tried to have surgery and it saved the dogs life. The test came back bad and the vet had to call my parents and tell them not to do the surgery. The vet should have a in home blood test that he can do in his office before surgery.

First of all I'm sorry your going through this and I hope everything comes out OK. Now I recommend that you ask all the necessary and unnecessary questions before the vet does any kind of procedure. If he's a good vet he'll answer even the stupidest of question to ease your mind. Ask if the dog has to go to sleep completely or if he can apply a local, maybe you can be there with her to calm her done while they are operating. Offer your assistance and maybe just maybe he can do it the hard way. Be patient and try to understand what the vet is telling you. But remember everything is in God's. Let him comfort you and guide you to the right decision,.

A while back, my German Shepherd, also named Gypsy, developed pancreatic cancer. She was 13 years old and was overweight as well! She underwent major surgery to remove her pancreas and came through it just fine!

The type of surgery your dog needs seems to be less risky, so I don't think you should worry too much! All you can do is hope and pray! My thoughts are with you!

Best Wishes!

I think the best thing to do is talk to your vet, get the full facts about the surgery and about the possible risks. that's the trouble with best you love sooner or later they will die, butt if Gypsy does die, mourn for a few weeks but then find things to get your mind off the loss.

I would trust the vet. The vet is still aware of the risks too, and although they're not always right, they do still have more information to base it off of than you do.

Good luck and I hope everything goes well :)

why wasn't their a biopsy done? or is this what you are doing now? 8 is not that old , she will do just fine I'm sure of it. labs and goldens are hearty breeds. even when chubby. its always better to get two opinions when in doubt though. maybe another vet at the same practice can talk to you too. good luck :)

If your vet says your dog needs the surgery , yes. I understand your concern. Speak with the vet about it. You want your dog safe and heathy. It is scary but it could be worse not following the vets order. You don't want you dog to suffer.Try not to worry...She will be feeling better soon. Best wishes to you and your dog.

Did they do a biopsy first to make sure it needed to come off? Also if they haven't done it already I would recommend they do blood titters to make sure her liver, heart, and kidneys are strong enough to handle the anesthetic. Being that she is a senior, as well as over weight, she has double the potential for complications. Best of luck, I pray she pulls through.

I don't think the vet would put your dog in jepordy. Ask your vet what risks she is taking. The tumor will keep growing and could spread. I would hate to see her lose her foot.
