Assuming you are a child, I would say get very very good grades, join lots of clubs (especially debate) and do lots of volunteering. Get into a good college and major in Political Science, run for city council or something local. Then run for senate, and after years and years of that, you might be able to run for president.

That's probably the most common way of even having a chance of running for president.

First, start writing like you know what you're doing.
Get very good grades in HS (and start working in political campaigns with the party of your choice - START MAKING POLITICAL CONTACTS, preferably with no less than a governor's race, but, start wherever you can).
Go to a college on the mid atlantic coast (e.g., Georgetown) and get GREAT grades. Major in polisci, public admin, or something very similiar. Keep working in campaigns - work your way up.
Become a precinct rep in your geopolitical area.
Unfortunately avoid Catholicism. Protestantism works very well though.
Avoid behaivors toward creating any skeletons which may (re: WILL) show up later in your closet.
Military service (as a reserve, doesn't hurt - volunteer or do an ROTC in college).
Work toward and get a Masters (this will only help).
You'll make the contacts you need along the way.
State Reps have a better chance, much better chance, than Senators. After the State Rep position then go for Governor or Lt. Gov. (this will give you the management experience you'll need and want to have).
Good Luck!

Keep your hands off little girls - especially fat ones - and get a degree in political science and then go to law school. It helps if you have an Ivy League school under your belt.

When you get out of law school, run for everything. Run for city council, legislature, the board of education and everything you can think of.

Get your name out there.

Canvass every door in the district for which you are running.

Run, Spot, Run. See Dick and Jane Run.
