In today's age, being 40 and pregnant is not so uncommon. It does bring on a little more risk than younger woman carrying a child. But then again, you take a risk every time you walk outside.

Not uncommon, throughout all history it has taken place. I don't understand why others are saying "now days" It isn't uncommon and never has been, just different circumstances. It is possible to get pregnant anytime during your menstruating yrs. The youngest I've ever heard of beginning @ 8 yrs. until some not going thru menopause until their late 60's. Although possible it's not always healthy or advisable.

I've seen both sides of this issue. Some people feel you are a disservice to the child because you will be out of energy to enjoy the child. They also say the older you are, the more wear and tear it is on your body to carry a child and not to mention the health problems that can occur with you or the child or both.

Then some people feel just the opposite. I've heard people say that you are more established financially, physically and mentally in your 40's so they feel its a great time to have a baby.

I say do what is right for you in your stage of your life because ultimately, it will be you living with this decision to have a child in your 40's. Think about the various stages of child development and how you can cope with those stages. Then think about the pros and the cons and make a wise decision based on what you feel would be best for you, your mate and the child.

It is very common especially now because women wait too long to have children and chase their career so more than half of them will end up with IVF treatmentsIn my opinion the best time to have children is from 20 to early 30 years old
