Unbelievably beautiful. Allow time for taking in the beauty. When you first see Lake Tahoe, it is a breath taking sight.

Both 50 and 80 are excellent routes. 80 to North Lake Tahoe and 50 for the South side. The ride is slightly less than 2 hours without stopping.

If you are taking 80, stop in Truckee and look around the town.

Just responding to you makes me think about doing it in August also.

You'll be driving California state route #50. The first 30 miles or so you will be in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. It is boring to me as I have driven the route many times, brown grass and oak trees,Oh, I almost forgot, this is where you should watch for the rare Mountain Penguins, they are almost extinct. The rest of the trip is very beautiful . You will be gaining elevation ,traveling along mountain streams and driving through a conifer forest as you travel farther east. Next comes the highlight of the trip,Echo Summit, You will see Lake Tahoe in the distance as you start down a very scenic, steep and winding grade. At bottom of the grade you are about 20 minutes from Lake Tahoe. All this in a distance I would guess to be 80 to 90 miles from Sacramento. Have fun.P.S. I lied about the penguins.

I live in El Dorado County which is part of the way to Tahoe from Sacramento on highway 50. You can drive Highway 50 and end up South Lake Tahoe or go up Intersate 80 and end up in Truckee which is at the north end of tahoe, both are nice, quick drives. However 80 is faster and has multiple lanes. 50 narrows in places and there are areas with cross traffic, like in Placerville. I've gone both ways, but I like Highway 50 the best. It's more interesting and scenic. If you have time stop in Placerville and look around, MainStreet is full of interesting shops inclding the Placerville News Company and the Placerville Hardware which is the oldest continuously operating store west of the Mississippi.

Have a nice trip! Star

you'd be using California state route #50. the first 30 miles or so that you'd be contained in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountain selection. that is uninteresting to me as I easily have pushed the route many cases, brown grass and o.ok.trees,Oh, I very nearly forgot, that's the position you should look ahead to the uncommon Mountain Penguins, they're very nearly extinct. something else of the vacation is extremely eye-catching . you'd be gaining elevation ,vacationing alongside mountain streams and using by a conifer wooded area as you come and forth farther east. next comes the spotlight of the vacation,Echo Summit, you'll see Lake Tahoe contained in the area as you commence down an extremely scenic, steep and winding grade. At bottom of the grade you're about 20 minutes from Lake Tahoe. All this in a distance i ought to guess to be 80 to ninety miles from Sacramento. have relaxing.P.S. I lied about the penguins.

Its a very nice drive.Highway 50 is a bit more rugged and a bit more scenic route to enter by; your approach is down out of the mountains to the lake where if you take I80 through Truckee you just sort of enter Tahoe there but to see it at Cal Neva is a nice picture too.Really I think it only takes a bit longer, like an hour to go by 50. Have a good trip.

Donner pass has a reputation for being an extremely difficult drive - especially when it's snowing. You should check with the CHP for road conditions before you leave, and if you think there's a chance of snow, you should have chains for all four tires ready.

Other than that, it's a long (duration) drive considering the short distance you're going. There's lots of twisty mountain roads. It's worth it though - Lake Tahoe's beautiful. Skiing, boating & gambling - nice.

South Lake Tahoe? (north take I80): For that special trip, detour Kyburz, Silver Fork road and stop and enjoy the water--all to yourself. Wrap around to Emmigrant Gap and make a scenic tour not to forget. Maybe too much time with kids.
