she does this over and over. She is very repetatitive.. Does anyone elses toddler play like this? She of course does play with other toys normally but she really loves to get the pens and line them up and then pick them up and then put them under her chin and so on and so on.. Is this normal? She likes to collect things:) She is a happy, social girl, although she only says a few words. She does babble all the time and always listens to me and understands me...

she sounds perfectly normal to me, she is learning fine motor skills. Try giving her some raisins or smarties in a small bottle, like an open pill bottle, she will love this as well, and will get a reward for work well done!

I am a mother of three, and yes, your daughter is normal. Playing with " non " toys captures the eye of a little one more than a bright toy will sometimes. My kids liked playing with pots and pans, lids, bowls, big spoons. Try stacking blocks, like the one with ABC's on them?? Children love to stack and then knock them down, and then start all over again. And repetition is great!! It shows just how much she has learned. And she's using her hand eye coordination and fine motor skills. Sounds like she's doing wonderful. ( my son had a kitchen drawer full of lids all to himself)

I wouldn't worry too much about this. It seems great for the develoment of her hand and eye coordination. If you are really worried, just set up a schedule for her to play with her pens 2 times a day and then 3 times a week, and so forth until she finds other activities. She sounds really good at entertaining herself and concentrating -- that's why I wouldn't worry too much.

She is actually familiarizing with the world. Its like my 31yo sister and my ocean kayak. When she visited she wanted to learn how to kayak...so she went on the ocean and she tryed the same moves for hours...cause she needed to learn. Toddlers do the same with very simple objects and simple movements. Simple for us, but complex to them. The human brain learns by repeating the same thing a lot of times, before we develop the ability to rationalize (6 years or so) then the learning process can take place by association. Your daughter is very normal, and pleae let her her be repetitive and obsessive as she pleases.

I wouldn't think anything of it, but you are the one that can judge your child the best.

She *may* have slight autism/OCD, but that can only be determined by a professional. Take her to her doctor, or take her to a pathologist. Chances are she just has a fascination with the sensation of pens and how they feel, etc, but again... you'll have to check with a professional if you want to be relatively 100% sure.

Good luck!

my daughter is the same way. she is 30 mos old and loves to put things in line and she lines them up perfectly. she will do this over and over again. she likes to collect little animals like cats and line them up. she also likes to get my body lotion bottles or makeup containers and arrange them. i am sure this is normal.
