An em is the square of the point size.
2 ens = em
18 units = em on Linotype machines
54 units = em on Agfa machines

I don't have my "line guage" (ruler) in front of me to remember the name of the unit used in the advertising like the yellow pages, had to do with the length of the columns; we'd say 2 columns by 1/2, etc.
