I try to learn as much as possible about the questioner. I look at their previous questions and answers, and take into account their age and demeanor. If I feel I can't answer a question honestly, and give usable advice, I don't answer. I'm sorry, my answer is I always put my heart into my opinion/suggestion.

I prefer tact with clarity most of the time. But I can't figure out how I drifted to etiquette from the religion section.

Best is to learn to ask the right questions to help people find their own advice. Something you discover on your own (even with help getting there) usually runs deeper, and you're more likely to commit to it.
