i had a root canal done today and something is just not right. i would rather have another baby then to go through the pain im going through. it hurts worse than when i got my wisdom teeth cut out. he drilled on it for 2 hours and its killing me. i cant sleep. it feels like sharp sudden stabbing pain that shoots up to my eyeball. it feels like someone is stabbing me with a needle. its giving me a migraine one second i will be fine and the next thing i know, im doubled over in pain. it happens so sudden, then its gone, then its back again. WHATS WRONG? DID HE MESS ME UP?

I would definitely call your dentist. If he says it's normal, I would at least get a second opinion from another dentist, just to be safe. Although all cases are probably different, I have gone through a root canal myself (three sessions), and haven't experienced and extreme pain or any pain for that matter. However, I did feel similar pain BEFORE knowing I needed a root canal:
* can't sleep
* headache
* feel like you wanna bang your head against the wall
* sometimes the pain is dull, sometimes it's sharp
* your whole head just hurts
The pain could also come from the work he has done. I have heard from my dentist that it may hurt afterwards, and prescribed some pain killers. Here's some info I found on pain after a root canal:
"Will there be any pain or discomfort after the root canal treatment?
The hope is that after your root canal treatment you will notice very little discomfort with your tooth. It can be common that for the first day or so after its treatment a tooth might feel a little tender. Whenever you have a question, in all cases, you should feel free to contact your dentist's office just to ensure that what you are experiencing seems to them to be within normal limits.
A tooth's sensitivity can often be minimized by using an over-the-counter analgesic, especially one that also possesses anti-inflammatory properties. Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) can be an effective choice for this type of discomfort. Of course you should always read the label, indications, and warnings of any product you anticipate using so to insure that it is an appropriate drug for you."

If it just happened today, then it could be a few things. First of all, your bite might be off - this means that when he did your root canal, you were numb and could not tell that your teeth were hitting at a different level than before you got your root canal. That is something that can be fixed very quickly. Second, they might not have gotten all of the nerve out. You get a root canal because your nerve is dying or has died. When you get one, the entire root is removed, therefore you should not feel a thing afterwards. You need them to check the xrays and make sure the whole root is gone.
Have you thought about the fact that you might have pain in another tooth as well? Recap: go to your follow up appt. and tell them to check your bite and to make sure they got the whole root. You can also get a 2nd opinion for free at another dentist office if you don't believe your dentist. Get a copy of your xray and take it there or the 2nd dentist office will charge you for xrays.
Hope that helps :)

Did you go to an endodontist? A regular dentist does not have the skills to do a root canal. If it is really bad, go to the ER for pain killers. Call an endodontist in the morning and tell him it's an emergency.

Just had two root canals yesterday. No pain at all. The job is to drill out the entire root so there is nothing to hurt. It sounds like he didn't get all the root out. It taste bad but campho phenique is a great pain killer. Call the dentist and get back in to see him. He needs to finish the job completely.

i don't know, but it truly sounds painful and makes me NEVER want to have a root canal again. i would call a 24 hour dentist. if you are unsure as to who to call, call the emergency room, tell them your situation, and they should be able to give the name of the dentist that is on call. explain things to him, and in the mean time, take your pain meds. it should help alleviate some the of the discomfort.

he could have hit a nerve or there could be infection. my mother got the same kind of treatment and the freaking doctor used hammer and everything possible to get a strong wisdom tooth out. For that my mom suffered for 4-5 years as he left a piece inside then there was infection.
MY ADVICE : have it checked again immediately.

It sounds like he could have hit a nerve. When I had my wisdom teeth pulled they hit a nerve and I couldn't feel my tongue for two weeks.
