I have a curious question. If you have notices the faces, and the surnames of the courageous american soldiers fighting for the USA in Iraq. All are Black, White and Hispanic. Why are there hardly any Asian faces??

Even illegal immigrants from Latin America and Africa are fighting for the USA because they want to defend the American People against terrorism.

But look at the faces and surnames of the american soldiers in the front lines of Iraq. All are black, white and hispanic. There is some philipino and islanders.

Where are the slanted eyed ones?? Not very many on the front lines. The only time you see slanted eye ones are on Star Trek Conventions or Sci Fi Shows

Asian-Americans are just as well represented in the US Armed Forces as any other American demographic. I have 2 friends who are Asian and in the military. 1 of them is in Iraq right now.

The guy who climbed the Saddam statue and put the American flag over its head was Asian-American.

Do you really think calling Asian-Americans, including those serving in the armed forces, 'slant-eyed' is showing any respect to those who are fighting for our country and those who are legal US citizens?

I'm a Vet working with vets all the time. A colleague at the local VA hospital in Van Nuys is Major James Wang. Why don't you call the hospital there and ask Dr. Wang why there aren't any slant-eyed Nips in the Army?

The honest truth is there are Asian-Americans serving in all branches of our military. Without stereotyping here I would have to say that you don't see that many of the front line because, from my experience, they tend to be a little more educated than your average recruit and often they end up as officers or in communications or the medical field.

First, please do not call Asians "slanted eyed ones". Thank you.

There are also a lot of other minorities who do not appear to be in the military. Have you seen many Indians (from India)? Arabs?

It appears that the only minorities that enter the military with any significant number are the Blacks and Latinos. I would like to know why.

They tend to really focus on education and have better options, to be frank. The army is an option to get college funding, for many.

Those fighting in Iraq were drawn from peacetime reserves and National Guard. Most did not particularly expect war during their course of duty, and chose it for interest or because of options it provided. If the country were attacked, you would see different demographics.

Best guess is the Asians (or Asian-Americans) tend to prefer technical specialties so you don't usually see them in the field. There may simply be fewer of them in the armed services to begin with, but I haven't been able to find a current reference to the racial composition of the armed services. Asians make up only 4% of the US population to start with.
