Yes I have heard of this incident.
The fact of the matter is that we screwed up and told the Israelis that we did not have any of our ships in the area. Turned out that due to a muddled chain-of-command situation the ship never got the orders to approach no closer than 100 miles to Israel during the conflict.
What would you expect Israel to have done when they saw an obvious spy ship in a location where the US had told them no US ship was?
