Ok, I am schedualed to have gall bladder surgery on the 4th of August (next Friday), and so I have been reading up about it here on answers. And I read on one of the answers about gallbladder surgery that if you are "over weight" they have to do the old procedure (slicing you completely open!). Now Im a bigger girl, not huge, but with the standards of today, i could be considered over weight. So now I'm freaked out about this whole surgery all over again. If you are a doctor or know any thing about this please let me know! Or you can instant message me. I'm really freaking out here! thank you! serious answers only!

Well I'm not only afraid of the pain, but the fact that I have a 3 year old. Plus I have heard that the invasive procedure of cutting you open gives you a bigger risk for complications from infection, long healing time, and just lots of pain in gerneral. Plus I have never had surgery before, so Im a little scared because my mom and my family are 1500 miles away.. i hope that satisfys all of you as to why i asked this question.

Generally, you have to be very obese, or morbidly obese, to make surgery through a scope not work correctly. Unless you have huge fat rolls which increase your waist circumference so much that the scope is not long enough, you have nothing to worry about. Your doctor would have probably informed you if you had to do it the old slice open way.

NOT TRUE.

I had the surgery several years ago and I was quite overweight at the time. They did a laparoscopy on me and the recovery time was only a couple of weeks. They did not have to do the "full" invasive surgery with the 8 week recovery.

It has been wonderful ever since! No more gall bladder attacks or heart burn!! :)

No worries, you'll be fine!

My uncle is over weight, he had surgery, he lived. u are not going to be awake for the whole slicing deal anyways. ur just afraid of the pain it could bring u. If ur going to be alive after the surgery, don't freak out.

My mom just had the surgery and they told her they start with the small incisions and only make the big incision unless absolutely necessary. like if the gallbladder is really swollen and infected.

I am a bigger girl and they did not have to cut me open it really depends on what happens when you get in there but i would not worry about it. things will work out fine.

I'd say that you probably will be cut open to remove a gallbladder, I don't see how else they can remove it.
