They are both set to 0 degrees F, but one of them makes ice cream so hard it bends my spoons, the other keeps the icream fresh. Suprisingly, the one that keeps it good is about 20 years old, while the one that doesn't is about 1 year old. Any ideas? I hate keeping ice cream in the basement freezer, I have to run up and down the stairs.

Sounds like the new freezer is set to the wrong temperature.
How did you get the 0 degree reading. See if you can find a good thermometer, and check both temps in your freezer.
It seems there should be difference, if so, adjust the new one accordingly/
One other thought, the new one, is working better than the old one, and doing a better job freezing. So adjust the dial, till the ice cream is where you want it. It may take a day or so, but it should work for you.

Is the seal on your newer freezer intact? If air is getting in the freezer then it's working overtime to keep the temp at the setting you've selected and it will cause freezer burn.

ok the reason is some frezers r coverd (a door) likw urs that makes it so there is more intens coldness wich freezes the ice cream hard in a molecular level wich mase it hard and its so soft wen u first get it thats because at the stor it is held in a one sided fridge so less intens coldness wich = softer ice cream
so there u u go

Do you use one more than the other? It can really take a toll on your food, if you open you freezer door a lot.

They just don't make stuff like they used to.
