Here is a website that has some theories:
http://www.family.org/married/topics/a0025114.cfm
Basically-a combination of various factors from early childhood, combined with society influences and so forth usually contribute to a gender or sexual identity crisis in adolecense (most of the time)...a young person usually has to sort through these, and unfortunately, there is not much support for young people to help sort through these things. They are either told 'it's ok, it's natural, don't fight nature' or 'stop it right now or you'll go to hell'. How many people are out there to help young people fight their homosexual urges in a caring manner-without shaming them or insulting homosexuals.
There was a lot of research going on in the psychiatric community on the topic, but unfortunately, the APA declared that homosexuality was not a disorder in any way and the APA sponsored research came to an abrupt halt. Now it's politically incorrect to try and find answers to help people struggling with this decision.
I don't think a person is born gay-and there has been no scientific evidence to support this (despite claims left wing activists)

They're born gay. It just takes time for them to come to terms with it in their lifetime.

People are born gay. It takes some people longer to accept the fact.
