probably because when a stranger talks to someone they usually want something, directions, money, help, or to rob you. too many unknown possibilities are there with a simple "hello" most people don't want to deal with it, so they ignore it.

Personally, I have NO problem going up to a stranger and saying "What's up?" Just me... MOST, not all, but most of the time I get in response, "what's up?" or "Hey." Something to that effect. But enough babbling... to answer your question... People now-a-days are too shut in. All their lives been told that strangers are bad... as children we're told not to talk to strangers because they could abduct you. True. But when you're old enough to know who is "bad" and who could be "good," it's more of a judgement call on your part. No one, just looking at me, would think that I'm a "good" stranger. I know that for a fact, but in all reality, if you don't say anything... would that person be more inclined to ACTUALLY rob or hurt you in some way, because you seem more timid? A weaker, easier target. But if you say something to that person as you walk by, they KNOW you've noticed them and that you probably aren't someone that they would want to target. Plus, the more people you talk to, the more possible friends you could make. So, WHY NOT TALK TO STRANGERS??? Anyone can email me on this topic at roughridertecmo@yahoo.com. Feel free... I'm always up for stimulating conversation about things.

Because when you talk to an unknown entity it is somewhat of a risk, you have no idea what to expect as a response from the person. Thus the "funny feeling" til you get a sense of how they may react to you.

I have lived in the North and in the South.
In the North if somebody spoke to you it was scary!
In the South it is like one huge family! Everybody speaks! (or waves if they are driving.) It is GREAT!!
Texas even has road side signs saying, "Drive Friendly."
What the world needs now is Love, sweet Love.

I think it stems back to childhood days of not speaking to strangers. With as much violence we see in our culture, I'm surprised people still address strangers they pass by.

Because I don't know who they are. I have a moment of "Do I know this person?" or "Why are they talking to me?" that and in my neighborhood after they greet you, you get bummed for spare change.
