Another person same name as mine owes Ward's a lot of money that was put in my credit report. I finally got rid of it about 6 years ago. Now I get a letter from a collection agency trying to collect that amount. What can I do now? This person also filed bankruptcy which also appeared on my credit report. The DOB and SSN are all different. Please advise. Thanks.

Sometimes situations like this are not identity theft, they are caused by lazy and careless employees of credit companies who do not look thoroughly at a person's account. If you have to people with the same name, they just go to the first name they come to. My father experienced that with his Sears card. My brother has the same name as our father and his wife paid their bill late a few times. My father found that out because they put the late payments on his card, not my brother's. After getting a copy of his credit report, my father found several other things that were my brothers on it. It took awhile and it was a major pain in the ***, but he managed to get it off. Start with the credit bureaus, demand that that persons bankruptsy be taken off your report. If this guy really did steal your identity, file a police report. Good luck.

The same thing happened to me concerning a VISA card. Get in touch with the company billing you and let them know you're a victim of identity theft. Then go down to your local police station and fill out a identity theft report, take the copy of the bill with you. You're probably going to be asked to send a copy of your police report to the billing company. They should be able to take it from there.

It's true Ward's has gone out of business, a billing business is still collecting overdue accounts on their behalf to aide in alleviating the deficit they suffered from low sales which caused them to close.

Call the agency and ask for a supervisor. Explain the situation. They will assuredly understand your situation. Also, to clear your credit, dispute the items with the various reporting services. You can do all of this online.
