I have recently discovered Lysol Orange and love the smell, can I use that to shampoo my carpets with? Any ideas on how to get rid of TERRIBLE pet smells? I mean urine soaked for weeks (housesitter didn't housesit the dogs and cats traditionally).

The carpets were brand new when I left. We just replaced the padding and painted the floor. *sigh* I'm looking at getting rid of most of the animals. I just need the carpet really clean and smelling really good once again, I'm not worried about repeat offenders.

I have a hoover carpet cleaner, although not often mine make mistakes in the house, I use it just the same.
I normally use GAIN directly in the water tank with the water "instead of in the shampoo reservoir part" and it always works great! I've used other things when out of gain, so I see no reason you can't use it.

Once the urine odor is embedded in carpet, flooring, etc. cats and dogs will detect traces of the ammonia and will continue to use the area as a bathroom. No matter how much you shampoo, the smell is still noticable to your pets, even if you think it's gone away.

The only solution to a problem this bad is to pull up the carpet and padding and throw them away. Once the floor dries out, it will have to be sealed with varnish or polyurethane. Sealing the wood is the only effective way to get rid of the odor.

Next time you go away on vacation, you'll actually spend less money by boarding your pets than having to replace carpeting.

Words of advice, NEVER use a chlorine bleach solution on animal urine soaked areas! When ammonia and bleach are mixed, a chlorine gas results which can cause coughing, loss of voice, feeling of burning and suffocation, and even death.

I wouldnt use the lysol to shampoo with, but i would shampoo the carpets, then there is a product that you can buy made by arm and hammer that is specifically made for pet odors. Called pet fresh. There are other products on the market. If none of this works then I would definately consider suing the pet sitter and make them pay to replace the carpeting. Take pictures of the damage if you plan to sue!!!!

Not sure...But I'd shampoo her butt to teach her a lesson.
