As if the ticking and the blinking light on your dash didn't give you a clue.. I always cancel out of habit right after merging. Any theories?

People are thinking about something else. It's probably not a short attention span, but a too-long attention span. Too much attention to whatever they're thinking and not on how well they're driving.

Here's a tip. If you see someone in the right lane with their blinker indicating a merge into the left lane, do what I do. Drive ahead of them and turn on your blinker, indicating that you're going to merge ahead of them into their lane.

Leave your blinker on & enjoy watching the person in your rear-view mirror get all ******* pissed off - totally unaware of the irony of their situation. Good times! Happy times!

Some blinkers are silent, as mine is....
Also, looking at the road and paying attention to your driving is a possibility. Although it annoys the heck out of other drivers.

A couple of reasons for leaving the blinker on - totally distracted and pretty close to being deaf. This has happened from time to time to my husband and he has usually been distracted and he is pretty close to being deaf.

If your music is loud, sometimes you can't hear it. And the way that my steering wheel lines up with the dash, I can't see the blinker.

My blinker doesn't make any noise and doesn't automatically turn off so i've driven around for hours before and not realized it

I can only assume that all those old people who do it are rocking out to some really loud music (that's usually why I forget to turn it off).

It goes along with the beat of the music on the radio.....

"Dangit, honey, all the newfangled kids' music has the same beat to it!"

"What? Turn it up!"
