It will NEVER happen. China declares that taiwan is part of china, and if that would ever happen, china would take it by force. Taiwan already is loaded to the gills with military hardware from the US, but china will never let it go. It would be like if California wanted to become an independent country. It could never happen. China, as it grows stronger and gains more clout as a world power ( It will be THE world power in 15 years) taiwan will become part of china. It sucks..but it is the truth.

This is an interesting question posted by someone who has obviously never lived in either places. So, I am going to answer it as realistically and truthfully as possible. (1) There is one China. It is divided into a number of different governments. But all the people in the individual countries consider themselves Chinese. These other governments include The PRC, Taiwan, Macao, Hong Kong, Singapore. (2) It is the official policy of mainland China to recognize the other Chinese nations in this manner. (3) This ability to recognize differently governed nations by the Chinese people is deeply rooted in the Chinese History. Here, the three Kingdoms formed a unifying template that clearly taught that eventually the Chinese people will be united. (4) There will never be a war between Taiwan and the PRC. There might, maybe be some politically motivated skirmishes, but real fighting... never. (5) The unification of Taiwan with the Mainland China, may or may not occur. But when and if it does, it will only be so if it were in the best interests of both national communities.

Taiwan does not have to be annexed by the United States to come under United States' administrative authority. In fact there are very good reasons under international law to say that there is no basis for the "Republic of China" flag to be flying over Taiwan territory after the coming into force of the post-war peace treaty on April 28, 1952.
In that treaty, Japan renounced the sovereignty of Taiwan, but that sovereignty was not awarded to the Republic of China. Hence, the ROC flag should have come down.
What flag should have been flying in Taiwan from April 28, 1952 to the present? It is the US flag. For more information, please see my source list.
So, in answer to your question, it is 100% reasonable to say that the United States is still currently holding Taiwan in a condition of military occupation even in the present day. That is the legal reality, and I feel fine about it. However, please note that military occupation is not annexation. A correct statement of Taiwan's current international legal position is to say that it is "unincorporated territory under the United States Military Government." (See the second item in my source list for relevant comparisons of the territorial cessions of Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Guam, Cuba, & Taiwan.)
As for the Republic of China on Taiwan, it is merely a subordinate occupying power (beginning Oct. 25, 1945) and a government in exile (beginning mid-December 1949).

Taiwan no matter what you've been told or think is under the influence of China. Our government has already made it very clear to China should Taiwan be invaded by China or try to become part of the USA, we will do nothing to help them, we will not raise a single finger for the Tawianese. This was settled a couple of years ago and the Taiwan government knows this already.
Now you know the truth.

I'd be on pins and needles, waiting to see what China would have to say about it. I'll bet they'd soil themselves!
